Dante Peoples Wanted by Fremont Police

The Oakley Police Department was dispatched to the 60 block of Kenwood Court Friday for a report of an adult male sibling of the homeowner threatening to assault another sibling with a stick.

According to police, the call came in at 8:41 am.  Additional information suggested the suspect was bipolar and having a manic episode while pacing around with a bunch of rocks in his pocket. Prior to police arrival, they learned the suspect, Dante Peoples, 40, Oakley was wanted on a domestic violence arrest warrant that was issued by the Fremont Police Department.

Upon arrival, Oakley Police officers did witness Peoples having some sort of mental health event, he was acting erratically and he was standing near a block of kitchen knives.  Officers tried to have Peoples come out to the front portion of the house, where it would be safer for all concerned.

Peoples responded by running to the backyard area of the house and officers chased after him. Peoples picked up a metal pole, measuring approximately 30” in length, and he began advancing on officers in a very threatening fashion. Officers drew their weapons out of concern for their personal safety and they implemented some very quick de-escalation techniques.

Peoples jumped a fence and that action put him onto Vintage Parkway where another one of our officers was positioned. Peoples threatened that officer with the metal pole too, he then jumped back into the backyard where all of this started.

Peoples picked up a 4’ gardening scythe and advanced on officers in a threatening fashion while demanding they shoot him. Our officers again deployed very quick de-escalation techniques, and Peoples dropped the scythe but pulled the rocks out of his pockets and cocked his arm back as if he was going to throw them at our officers.

An officers discharged an electronic weapon (TASER) at Peoples, but it proved to be ineffective. Officers then physically overpowered Peoples and took him into custody. Peoples was booked into jail for his outstanding arrest warrant, assault upon officers and resisting officers.

“My officers were clearly in a very difficult situation today. They met a great degree of resistance and they were physically threatened with three different forms of weapons. My officers remained ready to respond with the appropriate level of force while also falling back on their training and deploying de-escalation techniques,” said Chief Paul Beard. “This is a very good example of how sometimes de-escalation efforts do not work in an immediate and safe fashion the way we want them too, but our officers always place these efforts at the proper level of prioritization in the given situations they are placed in. I am proud of my officers for the professional way they handled this incident and I am glad nobody was injured.”
