Press Release

Pittsburg, California – The City of Pittsburg is set to celebrate on June 22, 2023, as it marks its 120th year since incorporation.

Over the past century, Pittsburg has grown from very humble beginnings to a vibrant, diverse, culturally rich, innovative, and welcoming community.

Founded in 1903, Pittsburg was initially a small mining town built around the convergence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. The earliest recorded history dates back to 1839, when the Mexican government granted nearly 9,000 acres, known as “Rancho Los Medanos.”

In 1855, This area soon became known as New York Landing and was a fishing village of approximately 500 residents.  By 1868, our town was known as Black Diamond for the vast reserves of coal found in the southern foothills.  In 1911, the name was changed to Pittsburg by popular vote to celebrate our thriving steel industry in recognition of our namesake city back east. Now Pittsburg is striding into the future, each day more prosperous than the one before. New homes, renovated historic homes, new businesses, and a revived historic theater district are all signs of the progress being made in Pittsburg.

Join the City of Pittsburg as they celebrate this anniversary during the Pittsburg Car Show in Old Town Pittsburg on Thursday, June 22 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Railroad Ave. and 5th St.  It will be a family-friendly event that includes cool cars, live music, great food, and more!
