MARTINEZ, CA – At their August 9, 2023, meeting, the Contra Costa Community College District (4CD) Governing Board (Board) approved a one-year community partnership with United Latino Voices (ULV) to assist in increasing the successful college-going culture within the Latinx community.

The Memorandum of Understanding with Diablo Valley College (DVC) focuses on informing, educating, and building trust with the Contra Costa County Latinx community about programs and affordability via culturally and linguistically responsive recruitment, community engagement activities, and materials distribution, and assisting in the enrollment/application process.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn and become a vital resource for our Latinx community while improving our recruitment results through this partnership,” says DVC President Susan Lamb. “Our job is to provide an affordable, equitable, and high quality education for all of our students, and we appreciate the collaboration with United Latino Voices to help us fulfill that mission with our community.”

4CD’s other two colleges — Contra Costa College and Los Medanos College — are currently designated Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), a national recognition that verifies a college serves a significant Latinx student populations and qualifies to apply for dedicated federal grants. Another goal of this partnership is to help DVC meet the qualifications and also become an HSI-designated institution.

“We applaud DVC for welcoming our community’s involvement and support to increase Latinx student achievement,” said ULV Chair of the Executive Leadership Team Concepcion Trevino James. “By expanding the college’s visibility at community events, and leveraging relationships with local partners and agencies, we believe we can assist in increasing their Latinx student population and success, which ultimately benefits our entire community.”

ULV’S Mission Statement – To improve health, education, and economic outcomes for our Contra Costa County Latinx community through advocacy, education, leadership development and innovative partnerships with community-based organizations, community leaders, community residents, elected officials, public/private agencies, and philanthropic foundations.
