Sacramento, CA – The State of California Board of State and Community Corrections announced that the San Ramon Police Department would receive $5,616,613 in grant funding to fight organized retail theft, alongside 37 other law enforcement agencies statewide. Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda) was proud to write a letter of support for the request to the Board to promote the safety of both local businesses and large retailers in Assembly District 16.

“This funding aligns perfectly with our shared vision of creating a safe, prosperous, and vibrant community,” said Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan. “By strengthening the resources and capabilities of the San Ramon Police Department, we empower our officers to respond swiftly to incidents, deter criminal activities, and ensure the safety of our residents and businesses.”

The grant would support the Police Department in their efforts to deter organized retail theft, recover stolen property, and support their dedication to keeping our communities safe through cutting-edge technology, unmanned aerial systems, increased community outreach, and other crime-prevention tools.

“Without question, the Assemblymember’s commitment to the San Ramon community and her support for our organization played a pivotal role in the success of this endeavor,” said San Ramon Police Chief Denton Carlson. “This funding will undoubtedly have a far-reaching positive impact, and we look forward to sharing our progress with her.”

San Ramon Police previously announced the grant on Sept. 16

This grant will enable us to implement a comprehensive strategy that combines proactive law enforcement initiatives with community engagement and education. These grant funds will be allocated towards the following key components:

  • Increased staffing to establish a dedicated team focused on suppressing and preventing organized retail theft.
  • Enhancements to our citywide camera network through additional automated license plate readers and situational cameras.
  • Enhancements to our drone program and establishing a Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program to reduce our response times and increase situational awareness for officers as they respond to incidents occurring within the City of San Ramon.
  • Increased community engagement to improve our educational programs related to organized retail theft prevention throughout the City of San Ramon.
  • Increased data and analytical capabilities to improve our response to and the prevention of incidents associated with organized retail theft.

We are extremely grateful to Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, the San Ramon Chamber of Commerce, the San Ramon Valley Islamic Center, and Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton, who all authored letters of support for the San Ramon Police Department’s grant application. We are incredibly fortunate to have partners such as these who are dedicated to increasing the safety and security of everyone in the San Ramon Community.

And as always, thank you for your support of our organization!
-Denton Carlson, Chief of Police
