On January 1st, California became the first state to offer universal health insurance to illegal immigrants; AB 1783 would stop taxpayer funding for this

SACRAMENTO, Calif., – On the first day the Legislature reconvened in Sacramento, Assemblyman Bill Essayli introduced Assembly Bill 1783 to repeal all taxpayer funding for healthcare for illegal immigrants in the California State Budget.

“It is unconscionable to spend billions of taxpayer dollars to give universal healthcare to illegal immigrants when our own citizens cannot afford their own healthcare on top of historic inflation and the highest cost of living in the nation. The state budget has a $68 billion deficit, insurance premiums are going up across the board, and consumer prices remain 19% higher than pre-pandemic levels,” Asm. Essayli remarked.

“Law-abiding immigrants like my parents are part of the great fabric of our state and nation. We cannot incentivize illegal immigration with free healthcare. We must take care of our own citizens before trying to care for the citizens of other nations,” Asm. Essayli added.

California also began 2024 with a serious budget deficit of $68,000,000,000.

Editors note:

I am confused. Would this bill actually “repeal the funding” or would it merely “state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation” to that end in the future?
