On Saturday, the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office confirmed they have recovered the body of a missing boater.

On Friday, January 5, 2024, at about 12:53 PM, Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched to Holland Tract Road near Knightsen regarding a report of a person who went missing in the water.

The person had apparently jumped into the water to secure a drifting vessel that was being salvaged. When he had difficulty in the water, another person attempted to rescue him but was unable to.

The Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit, assisted by Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, East Bay Regional Park District Police, and the CHP searched for the missing boater but were unable to locate him.

This morning at about 9:30 AM, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit Dive Team resumed the search and recovered the body of the boater.

The man is not being identified at this time.

Editors Notes:

On Friday, a person was last seen in the water around 12:30 pm. In total, three people entered the water and two people were able to safely get out, however, the third person was unable due to difficulty with the current–they were attempting to salvage a boat. By 1:48 pm, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District fire boat arrived on scene to assist firefighters already on scene conducting a search with the Contra Costa County Sheriff and were searching the area they believed the missing person was located.

All of us wake up assuming we will make it alive through the day. Normally a very good chance of this occurring, but by no means is it guaranteed.
