Pleasant Hill Police Chief Scott Vermillion issued a statement Thursday regarding the murder of Santiago Jacobo and says detectives are continuing the investigation and searching out all leads.

Pleasant Hill,

Last Saturday, our community experienced a tragedy when Mr. Santiago Jacobo, a resident of Pittsburg and member of the janitorial staff at Pleasant Hill Park, died from injuries sustained in an attack from an unknown assailant.

I know many of you are shocked and upset to hear that this crime occurred in our city, and I share your distress; the safeguarding of life and safety is of paramount importance for us as police officers and for a life to be violently taken in our community does not sit well with me as your Chief of Police. My deepest sympathy and sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Jacobo, and I wish them comfort and strength at this time and in the days and weeks ahead.

Our detectives and other police personnel have been working hard on this case, actively pursuing numerous leads and assessing all evidence. Given the need to protect our ongoing investigation, I can’t share any updates at this time, but I can assure each of you that this case is active and will remain so as our Investigations Bureau continues the task of following leads and building a case. What we are asking from the community is patience as we work to resolve this, and help from anyone who may have seen or heard anything. If anyone has information about this incident, we ask that you contact the Pleasant Hill Police Department Investigations Bureau at (925) 288-4630.

Public safety and the protection of life and property is our highest priority as law enforcement personnel. We recognize that this crime has given rise to feelings of fear and uncertainty for many in our community. I want to let each of you know that the Pleasant Hill Police Department continues to serve and protect the citizens of Pleasant Hill, increasing our patrols both day and into the night, including in and around our city parks. Should you witness activity that is suspicious, please contact us immediately.

Know that we are here, Pleasant Hill, and we mourn with you and the Jacobo family as we work to resolve this case and preserve the safety and well-being of our community.

I don’t know of many murders that are above board.
