This week, CHP-Hayward says a driver attempted to skirt Fastrak by using an “imaginary friend”. The driver was pulled over and cited.
The CHP released the following:
Imaginary friends don’t count as “Occupants” when setting a Fastrak transponder. Yesterday, this driver thought he could out smart our Officers on patrol but failed
While driving in the Express Lane on the freeway, drivers are required to set the transponder to the correct number of actual occupants inside the vehicle. Failure to set the transponder to the correct number of occupants will result in a citation of California Vehicle Code 23302(a)(1) and a fine of $238.
FasTrak is an electronic system to pay tolls on all Bay Area toll bridges and express lanes. Having a FasTrak account is convenient because you don’t need to carry cash to pay tolls and you are eligible for discounts on bridges and express lanes. It saves time because you don’t need to stop at toll plazas, and it allows carpools to use the carpool lanes, bypassing congestion.
Fastrak Benefits:
- It’s fast. Dedicated lanes let you breeze past lines at the tollbooth.
- It’s easy. The toll tag does all the work—no more fumbling for cash!
- It saves money. On the Golden Gate Bridge, all FasTrak users pay a discounted toll rate.
- It provides incentives to carpool. If you qualify as a carpool, you can receive discounted toll rates and use the carpool lane on toll bridges.
- It allows express lane use. With a valid FasTrak toll tag, you can use express lanes as a solo driver to save time and avoid congestion.

“Imaginary” is offensive. We prefer the term “Corporeally Challenged”
