Press Release

by CC News

WALNUT CREEK, CALIF — Cindy Darling, an environmental scientist, local small business owner, former Chair of the Walnut Creek Planning Commission and current Mayor Pro Tem, announced her re-election campaign for Walnut Creek City Council.

“Cindy Darling embodies the word ‘sustainability’ in all that she does,” said Contra Costa County District 4 Supervisor Ken Carlson. “As Mayor Pro Tem, she has drastically reduced Walnut Creek’s carbon footprint, enhanced innovation within city hall and worked tirelessly to maintain the city’s fiscal stability. Her efforts will ensure Walnut Creek can weather economic storms while delivering on its promise of an amazing quality of life, vibrant economy and public safety for all.”

Since being elected to the City Council in 2020, Cindy has delivered on her campaign promises by:

  • Funding and recruiting a full team of social workers to assist our homeless, helping them to move out of encampments and into housing.
  • Implementing a new climate sustainability plan, while keeping MCE Clean Energy rates below those of PG&E-powered cities—reducing carbon pollution by the equivalent of over 3 million gallons of gas.
  • Improving public safety for all by better training WCPD, fully funding services such as extra patrols and a data-driven approach to crime prevention, and implementing a 24/7 alternative mental health response program.

Before joining City Council, in her decade serving as Chair of the Walnut Creek Planning Commission, Cindy worked to protect open space and revitalize Walnut Creek’s downtown. As the Chair of the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee for the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority, she worked to protect our region’s shoreline.

In her professional career, Cindy has served the people of California as Deputy Assistant Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency and an environmental scientist in the Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Following her career in public service, she and her husband, Gary, opened a Walnut Creek-based small business and raised their two children in local public schools. She has also been a leader in the Boy and Girl Scouts, and has volunteered with various community organizations, including the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce and Walnut Creek Open Space Foundation.

“Working with Cindy over the past 15 years, she has proven herself to be a creative thinker, a problem solver and a bridge builder,” said Gary Skrel, former Walnut Creek Mayor. Her economic development efforts promote our downtown’s continued success and create a strong city hall. We all get to enjoy high quality city services and a balanced city budget with healthy reserves.”
