California Gas Tax Set to Increase July 1

by CC News

On July 1, the California Gas Tax is set to increase to 60 cents per gallon, which has more than doubled since 2017 when it was just 27.8 cents per gallon.

The announcement of a gas tax increase from 58 cents to 60 cents was made in May 2024 — see notice here. For a breakdown on taxes, click here. If you have a 12-gallon tank, you will pay an extra quarter. However, in total taxes, you are paying $1.28 per gallon. On a 12-gallon tank, you are paying $15.36 in taxes/fees.

As of Friday, June 28, Californians are paying $4.80 per gallon according to AAA. While drivers in Contra Costa County are  paying $4.88 per gallon. The announcement of a gas tax increase was made in May 2024 — see notice here. For a breakdown on taxes, click here

According to AAA, with oil costs accounting for about 54% of what you pay at the pump, more expensive oil usually leads to more expensive gas.

“Summer got off to a slow start last week with low gas demand,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “But with a record 60 million travelers forecast to hit the road for the July 4th holiday, that number could pop over the next ten days.  But will oil stay above $80 a barrel, or will it sag again? Stay tuned.”

Like California, several states will adjust fuel taxes and fees starting Monday, July 1 which include Indiana, Virginia and Michigan.

Remember this the next time Newsom gets up on his “evil oil companies gouging the public” soapbox.

It’s funny how people cry over $5 for $128 oz of gas, but gladly spend $7 on 12 oz coffee from Starbucks. 🤣
