Four Injured in Vehicle Crash on Byron Highway Sunday Afternoon

by CC News

At 3:10 pm Sunday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a major vehicle crash on Byron Highway near Hay Road in the Town of Byron. Dense fog was reported in the area.

At 3:24 pm, it was reported that three vehicles were involved with a PG&E pole town across the roadway.  At least three AMR units were requested with two medical helicopters. It was reported that a baby was ejected in the crash.

At 3:28 pm, CONFIRE reported 4 patients with 1 needing extrication, 1 with major injuries another three with moderate injuries. A total of 4 AMR units were requested. Due to fog, medical helicopters were determining whether to land at the Byron Airport or John Muir Urgent Care helicopter landing pad in the City of Brentwood.

H30 was overhead as of 3:37 pm where they reported the scene was completely fogged in and could not see the City of Brentwood. They were still possibly attempting to land at the Byron Airport but that was soon not an option.

By 3:42 pm, H30 confirmed the area was “fogged over” with the closed landing spot being the opposite direction of a hillside on Vasco Road near the county line, all patients to be ground transported. All three AMR units were reported to be within 5-25 minutes response with PG&E being a 30 minute response times.

3:44 pm UPDATE:
The child was going to be ground transported as the helicopter found a landing spot near the dumps at the county line in Alameda County. AMR then opted to go by ground.

5:00 pm UPDATE
Per a witness who arrived on scene, she said the baby was pulled from the vehicle and not ejected as stated by CONFIRE. it was later confirmed by CONFIRE baby was not ejected as first thought.
