Guilty Verdict in Retrial of Pittsburg Man’s Shooting Death of Wife

Martinez, Calif. –  62-year-old Kevin Jerome Easter has been found guilty of first degree murder. The Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office retried the case after the original conviction was overturned on appeal in 2019.

Easter shot his wife multiple times on the night of August 7^th, 2013, in their Pittsburg residence. During his trial in 2014, his defense attorney declared that Easter was not competent to stand trial for his crimes, which included a firearm enhancement and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Competency issues were renewed in 2015 by his defense, but a judge ultimately found him guilty. He was sentenced to 65 years and eight months in prison. His appeal in 2019 reversed the conviction, resolved the competency issues, and returned the case to Superior Court for a retrial – where the prosecution prevailed in court. — full story

CHP Seeks Public Help in Fatal Hit-and-Run Case

The California Highway Patrol is asking for assistance in what appears to be a fatal hit-and-run crash involving Damond Lazenby. Lazenby was reported missing on January 1, 2023 and his body was located on the shoulder of Highway 4 eastbound between Port Chicago Highway and Willow Pass Road in Contra Costa County.

According to CHP, it appears Lazenby was struck by a vehicle. The CHP believes Lazenby was struck by the right front portion of a vehicle, and the driver fled the scene. 

The vehicle is possibly a dark color sedan. Anyone with information regarding the driver or suspect vehicle is encouraged to leave a detailed message on the CHP 24/7 tip line at (707) 917-4491. — full story
