Fatal crash

At 8:18 pm Friday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of an overturned vehicle crash with ejection on eastbound Highway 4 at Bailey Road in Bay Point that left two dead.

According to fire crews who arrived on scene, they reported a vehicle was on its roof with two patients out of the vehicle who were both in critical condition. A medical helicopter was requested with a landing zone of directly on Highway 4.

UPDATE: Two vehicle fatal crash on SR-4 near Bay Point.

Last night (6/30/23) around 8:16pm, CHP Contra Costa was advised of a two vehicle crash on eastbound SR-4, west of Bailey Road. A GMC pickup, with two occupants, and a Volkswagen Sedan, with one occupant, were traveling eastbound on SR-4.

Our preliminary investigation indicates the GMC collided into the Volkswagen which caused the GMC to leave the roadway and overturn. During the crash sequence, both occupants of the GMC were ejected from the vehicle.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene to render aid.  Both occupants of the GMC were transported to the hospital and were later pronounced deceased. The driver of the Volkswagen was not injured.

This crash is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed it or the events leading up to it, please contact CHP Contra Costa in Martinez, (925) 646-4980 or email [email protected]

I don’t know why CHP stopped having a constant visual presence on HWY 4 but they need to resume it. It’s an invitation to death! People driving over 100, in n out of traffic like they are NASCAR with out the NASCAR skills. This is real life not a video game. It’s totally out of control

Same on Kirker Pass depending on the hour. Horrible. Won’t drive on 4 any more; too many wrong way drivers and crazy drivers. Nothing like coming home from a long shift and some crazy driver evading police gets on going wrong way at Willow Pass or beyond on ramp.

I agree with above comments regarding the excessive speed of some drivers on hwy 4 and 242; sometimes two vehicles, like they’re racing. They put other drivers at risk. Happens too often.
