On Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at about 7:01 PM, a Contra Costa County Sheriff deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop in Bay Point. The vehicle immediately fled and began making evasive maneuvers in an attempt to escape.
The suspect vehicle collided with another vehicle at Bailey Road, westbound Highway 4 on-ramp. The suspect vehicle fled the scene, and deputies terminated the pursuit. The driver of the vehicle that was struck was treated and later released from a local hospital.
A deputy located the suspect vehicle at Bates Road and Port Chicago Highway. The suspect led deputies on a pursuit west on Highway 4 into Martinez, where the suspect brandished a large machete-style knife at deputies out of the driver’s side window. The suspect then continued fleeing west on Highway 4.
The California Highway Patrol was able to disable the vehicle on Highway 4 near Hillcrest Avenue in Antioch, where the suspect was taken into custody. He is identified as 33-year-old Jose Enrique Ramirez of Martinez.
He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of felony evading, hit and run, possession of drug paraphernalia, and probation violation.
He is being held in lieu of $105,000 bail.
Note
The incident briefly shutdown multiple lanes of Highway 4 causing a backup for several miles.

Nice work CCCS & CHP!
The rest of the local police agencies should follow the sheriff’s department model. They handle business and don’t back down. Brentwood is scared and super weak. They knealt with the protesters and have just gotten weaker and weaker. They spnd more time kissing ass and doing social media than any actual police work.
The new chief is even more pathetic than the last one.
A bit confused here. How do you flee west and end up at Hillcrest?
