Contra Costa Sheriff to Provide Quarterly Oversight Report

On Tuesday, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will receive its oversight report from the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office.

The report features a variety of data points which includes total bookings, calls for service,  racial data, population data, in-custody deaths, Narcan deployments, assaults on staff, ICE reporting and other data. This report was suggested last August in an effort by the Public Protection Committee aimed at improving communication from the Sheriffs Office and the community

Total MDF Bookings

  • January to June – 6,940 (an increase of 328 from 2022)

Total Custody Alternative bookings

  • January to June – 702 (a decrease of 74 from 2022)

Bookings by Race (April to June 2023):

  • Asian – 131 (3.2% of bookings)
  • Black – 1,288 (31.4% of bookings)
  • Hispanic – 1,307 (31.9% of bookings)
  • White – 1,1178 (28.7% of bookings)
  • Other – 198 (4.8% of bookings)

Other Tidbits:

  • Assaults on Staff: 28 assaults have been reported for 2023 year to date while in 2022 there were 51.  On April 19th, a recently released inmate tried to grope a female deputy in the lobby of the Martinez Detention Facility. He was re-arrested and later charged by the District Attorney’s Office for attempted sexual battery. The deputy sheriff was not injured and returned to work the following day.
  • Coroner Cases: 443 year to date (448 in 2022)
  • Coroner (autopsies): 237 year to date compared to 246 in 2022)
  • Mental Health: 209 evaluation deployments.
  • Mental Health
    • Total Welfare & Institutions 5150 calls: 613 total calls year to date compared to 716 in 2022.
    • Total non-violent welfare & institution calls 5150: 549 total calls to date compared to 643 in 2022.
    • Total violent welfare & institution calls 5150: 64 calls year to date compared to 73 in 2022.
  • Request for Notifications for Ice I-247: There was a total of 237 year to date when compared to 199 in 2022.  In terms of total notifications made, 68 were made while in 2022 it was 71.
  • Narcan Deployment: While in 2022, they had 0 deployments, thus far in 2023 they have had a total of 11. The deployments began being tracked in July 2022.
  • Tenant Removal
    • Writ of Possession of Real property: 185 year to date compared to 117 in 2022.
    • Tenant Removal with Use of Force: 1 year to date which matches last year which had 1.

How about a similar report from DA listing decline to prosecute, plea bargain to lesser charge, charges eliminated for plea bargain, number of convictions, etc. Don’t people of Contra Costa deserve to be publicly informed of how efficiently justice is being applied?
