Lafayette Police Catch Robbery Suspect After Pursuit

On Tuesday, the Lafayette Police Department responded to a report of a robbery at a Chevron Station which resulted in a pursuit and vehicle crash in the City of Lafayette.

According to police, the incident occurred in the downtown area at approximately 12:30 p.m. with a suspect holding up a person at the station and fleeing west on Mt. Diablo Boulevard in a black Dodge Caliber hatchback. Lafayette police, alerted to the theft, fell in behind the vehicle as it passed the Lafayette Reservoir and initiated a pursuit when the driver attempted to flee.

The suspect allegedly brandished a knife during commission of the robbery.

A subsequent vehicle chase ended up heading in both the westbound and eastbound directions of Mt. Diablo while the driver apparently sought an escape route, eventually turning onto Pine Lane from El Nido Ranch Road before crashing at Pine and Howard Hills Road.

The male suspect fled from the crash site on foot but was taken into custody a short distance away, reporting a leg injury he suffered in the crash.

According to preliminary information by Contra Costa County Fire, it came in as a possible broken leg. The suspect was not identified by police or the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office.

Update – According to Contra Costa County Sheriffs Spokesperson, the suspect was identified as Kevin Jay Chico, 36-years-old, Denver, Colorado.
