A pair of Antioch residents were arrested Thursday by the Petaluma Police Department after a theft attempt of over $18k in merchandise. Police say two citizens had physically detained Casey Canion and Keiarra Spencer .

Police said one of the suspects is accused of using pepper spray on a passerby who tried to detain her. The person who detained them was treated for minor injuries.

According to Petaluma police:

Yesterday at 12:33 PM, we were dispatched to Sunglass Hut at the Petaluma Outlets for a robbery which had just occurred. The reporting party advised dispatch that two suspects, later identified as Casey Canion and Keiarra Spencer, had gathered over $18,000 of merchandise and attempted to flee out of the store without paying when a security guard attempted to stop them.

The reporting party advised Spencer and Canion pushed through a door past the security guard and continued to flee.

Multiple Petaluma Police officers arrived on scene and found both Canion and Spencer physically detained by two citizens, just outside of the store. One of the citizens had been assaulted by Canion with pepper spray.

As the officers conducted their investigation, they learned that after Canion and Spencer pushed through the door past the security guard, they began to flee on foot with the security guard chasing them. The two citizens, a father, and his adult son, observed Canion and Spencer fleeing toward them with the security guard chasing them and shouting at them.

Realizing some sort of crime had just occurred, one of the citizens grabbed Canion and the other grabbed Spencer.

Both Canion and Spencer immediately began struggling with the citizens in an effort to get away. While struggling to get away, Canion sprayed the citizen that was detaining her with pepper spray in his eyes. The citizen then took Canion to the ground and continued to detain her, with pepper spray in his eyes, until police arrived.

Once officers arrived on scene, Canion and Spencer were arrested without further incident. They were later transported to the Sonoma County Jail and booked in for Felony Robbery and Felony Conspiracy to commit Robbery. Canion was also booked in for an additional charge of Felony Illegal Use of a Tear Gas Weapon.

The citizen who was sprayed in the eyes with pepper spray was treated at scene by medics from Petaluma Firefighters for minor injuries.

Although we encourage citizens to be good witnesses and not physically get involved in crimes in progress for their own safety, we are very thankful to the two citizens for their courageous actions which led to these arrests. As a result, more than $18,000 in stolen merchandise was returned to the store and a serious crime was thwarted in our community.

Same Crook September 30, 2023 - 2:53 pm

So it’s the same crook that was arrested in another city for a similar theft that’s at it again. Caught with a combined value of over $31K. Let’s see whether she stays in jail this time though I won’t hold my breath.
