Danville Breaks Down Vehicle Theft Data from 2023

The Danville Police Department reported that 36 vehicles were stolen in town in 2023. They also broke down how the vehicles were stolen.

According to police:

  • 14 vehicles were stolen because they were left unlocked with keys inside.
  • 10 thefts involved older vehicles with “punched” ignitions, a method where the ignition is forcibly turned.
  • 5 cars were hacked via the OBD2 port, a tactic that bypasses the vehicle’s security system.
  • 4 trailers have been reported stolen.
  • 3 cases fall under unusual circumstances where the vehicle owners had missing keys.

According to Danville Police, here is a look at their stolen vehicles over the past few years:

  • 2023 –36
  • 2022 – 21
  • 2021 – 20
  • 2020 – 9
  • 20219 – 13
  • 2018 – 22

Danville Police urge the community to continue to be vigilant in 2024 and provided the following tips on how to prevent thefts:

  • Always lock your cars.
  • Consider keeping your vehicles in the garage.
  • Never leave your keys in or near the vehicle.
  • Consider anti-theft devices for older models.
  • Secure your trailers with locks.
  • Keep an eye out for and report any suspicious activity.

2022 California Vehicle Theft Facts

VEHICLE THEFTS
• In 2022, 198,538 vehicles were stolen, at an estimated total value of $1.76 billion. This is a 1.9 percent increase from the 2021 total for vehicle thefts statewide. The average rate of vehicle thefts in 2022 was approximately one (1) vehicle
every three (3) minutes.
• Of the 198,538 vehicles stolen in 2022, 48.2 percent were personal trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUV), 36.6 percent were automobiles, 6.2 percent were commercial trucks and trailers, and 5.1 percent were motorcycles. All other
vehicles (e.g., recreational vehicles, construction and farm equipment, special construction) accounted for 3.9 percent of thefts

WHERE THE THEFTS OCCURRED
• Approximately 53.5 percent of all vehicle thefts occurred in Southern California (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego Counties). Of the vehicle thefts in Southern California, 58.2 percent occurred in Los Angeles County.
• Approximately 18 percent of all vehicle thefts occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties). Of the vehicle thefts in the San Francisco Bay Area, 44.8 percent occurred in Alameda County.

This is funny. Would like to see Antioch’s stats on the 30 to 40 cars stolen a WEEK!!! Just saying.
