BART Police Say 17-Year-Old Arrested in Pittsburg BART Station Shooting

Bay Area Rapid Transit Police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old who allegedly shot and wounded two people at the Pittsburg BART Station.

According to police, at 10:30 am on Tuesday, January 23rd the suspect in Friday afternoon’s shooting at Pittsburg Center Station was taken into custody.

The 17-year-old suspect surrendered to BART Police detectives in Walnut Creek. The suspect will be booked into Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall. Police said he is believed to be the only suspect in Friday’s shooting. Video from one of BART’s network of more than 4,000 surveillance cameras throughout the system played an important role in identifying the suspect.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit Police Department is investigating a Friday shooting that left two people wounded at the Pittsburg BART Station.

BART first alerted riders of the Pittsburg Station closure at 4:00 pm and confirmed the shooting at 4:19 pm saying trains are running through the station but were not stopping. They encouraged Riders who normally use Pittsburg Center can take Tri Delta Transit buses 380 and 387 to get to Antioch or Pittsburg/ Bay Point for free.

By 8:42 pm, normal train service was restored.

BART PD investigates shooting at Pittsburg Center Station

At 3:51 pm on Friday, January 19 BART Police Department received a call about a shooting that occurred on the platform of Pittsburg Center Station. The initial report was that a male suspect shot a male victim and fled the scene. The victim was taken to an area hospital and remains in critical condition.

A few hours later a second male victim who had also been shot showed up at an area hospital. The second victim remains in stable condition with a wound to his leg. BART PD is working to determine a motive for the shooting. At this point, investigators believe the shooting was not random.

The incident forced the shutdown of Pittsburg Center Station for approximately 4 1/2 hours so investigators could gather evidence. Investigators are also reviewing surveillance video captured by platform cameras at the station. The station has now been reopened and normal service has been restored.
