The City of Antioch has named former Pittsburg Police Chief Brian Addington as its next interim Chief of Police of the Antioch Police Department.
Addington retired on May 5, 2022 after serving the past 9 years as Pittsburg police chief. He began his police career in October of 1994 with the Pittsburg Police Department. In a letter posted to social media, Chief Brian Addington shared the news of his retirement with the community.
Here is the official notice by the City of Antioch:
Antioch, CA: The City of Antioch has selected retired Chief Brian Addington to serve as the Interim Chief of Police until a permanent chief is appointed. Chief Addington brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of East Contra Costa County law enforcement to this leadership role. He has a proven track record of leadership and dedication to public safety that are essential to guiding the department during this transitional period. Chief Addington’s first day in the office will be Monday, February 26, 2024.
Chief Addington understands the challenges and opportunities facing law enforcement in our community. With over a decade of experience as the Police Chief in neighboring Pittsburg, he has demonstrated his commitment to serving the residents of East Contra Costa County with integrity and professionalism.
“We are confident that Chief Addington’s leadership will enhance the safety and security of our community,” said Acting City Manager Kwame Reed. “His extensive knowledge of local policing issues and his strong ties with the East County community make him the perfect choice to lead the Antioch Police Department during this interim period.”
“Retired Chief Addington will come to Antioch with a strong ability to make tough decisions under difficult circumstances.” Said Mayor Lamar Hernandez-Thorpe. “Until the hiring of a permanent chief of police, he’ll work with City Hall to continue to rebuild police staffing levels and decrease 911 response times.”
Chief Addington expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Interim Chief of Police, stating, “I am honored to join the dedicated men and women of the Antioch Police Department. We will work tirelessly – with a renewed focus on serving our community – and upholding the department’s mission of protecting and serving the residents of Antioch with integrity, compassion, and professionalism.”
As for Antioch, its another chief for a department who has struggled with retention and staying fully staffed. Back in August, Acting Captain Joseph Vigil has been named Acting Chief effective Aug. 12. His appointment came after former Chief of Police Steven Ford announced retirement would begin in August.
Ford was hired as interim police chief in April 2022 and was named permanent chief effective October 2022. Former police chief Tammany Brooks retired in September of 2021. Captain Tony Morefield also served as interim chief prior to Ford being hired.

Welcome Mike; please form a task force to go after these car thieves. It isn’t fair that so many hard working people are losing their vehicles to these thieves every night and little to no action has been taken at all to catch those responsible. City Council spends too much time on ridiculous Police Oversight Committee instead of attending to urgent business. Most want to vote current council out ASAP!
Thank you.

Seven months to find an “interim” police chief…
No one is racing to work with a self serving, police bashing mayor who sees police as the enemy and criminals as the group that needs protection. Public safety is not even on his radar.
Let’s hope he can survive the anti police sentiment of our feckless mayor. Antioch needs leadership in our Police Department free from the meddling this anti police Council is famous for. I would also hope this chief can bring safety back to our streets.
Fingers crossed that our new guy will make a difference, despite the council’s propensity to never getting it right. If we can last until WE VOTE OUT ALL BAD ACTORS FROM CITY COUNCIL starting with Thorpe we’ll be on the road to recovery. If Thorpe gets re-elected, we are outta’ Taxifornia!!
