Antioch

On Sunday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a warehouse fire in the City of Antioch.

The fire broke out around 2:30 pm at a vacant warehouse fire at 1200 4th Street, which CONFIRE has responded to several times in the past year, which took approximately 30-minutes to extinguish. However, they were on scene longer due to hot spots. By 6:00 pm, CONFIRE was beginning to break down the incident.

According to CONFIRE, no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

In 2023, Contra Costa County Fire responded to this location several times, including a 4-alarm fire in June and a 2-alarm fire in December.

In December, the fire was located in a section of the warehouse that Contra Costa County firefighters had previously responded to in October on two occasions. There was heavy fire to the roof and it appeared the building was occupied by homeless. Around 2:20 am, CONFIRE announced firefighter search teams identified and removed two occupants and animal uninjured, secondary search was clear, and that the fire was out. Crews will be on scene in overhaul, continue to avoid area.

In June, CONFIRE stated this warehouse is a known hazardous occupancy with a basement and numerous other interior hazards. That fire was fought defensively and moved to a 4-alarm response. CONFIRE says it was successful in protecting exposures and limiting the spread of the fire to approximately 50 % of the building.

This complex has had numerous prior fires due to break-ins from people experiencing homelessness occupying the vacant buildings. Crews will be returning throughout the day to monitor the building, conduct additional overhaul, and to assist Fire Investigators with their Investigation.

Who ones this warehouse? Can it be demolished? If this is an ongoing issue, it is wasting our resources and putting surrounding buildings in danger.

Did fire finally put an end to this recurring issue Antioch proved incapable of resolving?

No comment on the source of the fire. Does there really need to be an official one? Any think person already knows the source.
