Island Fire Sends Smoke into Contra Costa County

A vegetation fire broke out Friday morning that is sending smoke into Contra Costa County.

The call came in around 6:30 am which prompted Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters to respond to Kimball Island. Boat 81 responded to an exterior fire.

By 11:00 am, smoke was visible across East Contra Costa County, specifically from the City of Antioch, City of Oakley and City of Pittsburg. Folks driving on SR-160 will also see the smoke.

No other updates were available.

11:38 am UPDATE: Statement from CONFIRE 

The Fire District has received several calls of a fire on an island in the delta this morning. Contra Costa Fire is investigating, monitoring and attempting to notify the appropriate fire agency. This incident is outside the fire district’s jurisdiction.

Was this a controlled burn? One time I was working on the Pittsburgh shore line and I saw a Coast Guard C130 drop a flare on Browns Island. Torched the whole thing. Anyways, it seems to be a good burn as of when I last looked that way…

Lived here for most of my life. Witnessed many Delta fires.The unpopulated islands occasionally start fire. Many of them are peat dirt that can burn for many acres and requires flooding to put out. Firefighters cannot put them out with trucks and hoses. That means that sometimes the fire has to burn itself out. Just part of the geography.
