Brentwood Offers FAQ After 9-Hole Golf Course Set to Close

by CC News

During Tuesday nights Brentwood City Council Meeting, several residents spoke during public comments regarding the closure of the Diablo Golf Course.

The 9-hole private golf course it located at 100 Summerset Drive in the City of Brentwood and is anticipated to close sometime within the next 6-months.

Residents offered concerns over open space on private land. They expressed concerns over a re-zone and if that might co public use such as a community now being granted access to walk the cart paths. There were concerns over  trees and vegetation maintenance, water and ponds being maintained  to several other issues including liability and repairs.

Residents expressed concerns on how Measure Q qualifies to this property in terms of a zoning request and who can request it. They also wanted to know when an election might take place–such as waiting until the next general election or if a special election can be called. Finally, they wanted to know if any zoning request could be made without a ballot measure.

City Manager Tim Ogden stated Tuesday the city had equal concerns over the closure of the Diablo Course and the city has a vested interest with the residents and the quality of life in those neighborhoods.

“The city has been in contact with the golf course owner and have an understanding he plans to schedule a town hall with all the residents that could be impacted by the closure and it has not been set,” said Ogden. “We encourage the residents to contact the private owners and try to get that scheduled and we will collaborate. Measure Q is new and fresh and still learning all its implementations.”

At the council meeting staff said it would get an FAQ out to residents to make them aware of several items while addressing concerns of residents. It was also stated the 18-hole Brentwood Golf Course will remain open.

Ogden added that the property owner has ensured the City that a meeting with nearby neighbors will be scheduled soon, and that they will maintain the property after the course is closed.

On November 8, Brentwood residents passed Measure Q with 64.28% approval. Contra Costa County Elections certified the election on Dec. 3.

Here is the FAQ released Thursday:

If the owners of golf course would promote the course I believe it could thrive. There is such a great opportunity here to succeed. Shadow Lakes just reopened and believe homeowners will benefit from the opening.
