Brentwood Commission Set to Discuss Sand Creek Sports Complex

Sports Complex

On Thursday, the Brentwood Park and Recreation Commissioners will be looking to approve the overall conceptual plan for the Sand Creek Sports Complex.

The item reaches the commissioners after the city held three public meetings to seek feedback from the community on what they thought should be included in the park and review conceptual designs.

The Sports Complex Phase 1 consists of 14.50 acres of city-owned property on Sand Creek Road at Fairview.  The updated concept provided in the staff report includes synthetic turf for multi-purpose use from soccer fields to lacrosse. The plan includes a parking lot, restrooms, picnic area and other possible park amenities such as pickleball courts, exercise equipment, playground etc.

Phase II is made up of the Contra Costa County Flood Control detention basin, which consists of 19.24 acres, and will potentially add 2-3 sports fields.  The total project estimated cost is $15 million.

This project was approved as part of the FY 2022/23 – 26/27 Capital Improvement Program that was adopted by City Council on June 28, 2022.

City Council awarded an Agreement for Landscape Design Architectural Services to Verde Design, Inc. on November 15, 2022.  The work for this agreement will commence the first week of December 2022.

The Sports Complex will ultimately make its way to the city council for final approval on the plan at a later date.

Note: Although not included in the staff report, there was a 51-page power point which includes an overview of the existing site, preliminary park elements, such as multi-use fields and amenities, grass vs. turf considerations, along with sample sports fields and complexes. The presentation also includes three preliminary designs which have since been updated, but this is the background of where the city was and Thursday is where they are now at.

Hopefully this gets shot down that is a small intersection at fairview and sandcreek and the absolute last thing we all need is more traffic. Just say no! Go to sunset fields that what we built it for!

Sports fields and parks are necessary for a healthy and safe community, not to mention our local property values. Some traffic inconvenience may be necessary if we want to build and keep a quality home town.
