Evacuation Order Continues in San Pablo After Hazmat Response

As of Thursday Morning, Contra Costa County Fire and County Hazmat are still working an incident that has prompted mandatory evacuations in the City of San Pablo.

Contra Costa County Fire said Wednesday it found hundreds of boxes found with several hazardous materials, a bomb squad was called in to investigate. CONFIRE has not yet stated publicly what were in the boxes.

At 6:20 am Thursday, San Pablo Police said they remained on scene along with CONFIRE and County Hazmat overnight and will remain present through the day. Contra Costa County Fire HAZMAT Teams, Contra Costa County Health Department, and San Pablo PD crews are still working this incident and the area remains closed to the Public. Please use alternate routes.

On Wednesday, The incident is occurring in the 900 block of Stanton Avenue which prompted multiple blocks to be evacuated displacing hundreds of residents. The evacuation order was anticipated to last 24-hours after first issuing a shelter-in-place order just before 1:00 pm before the county issued an evacuation order at 4:20 pm.

This is a message from the San Pablo Police Department. Due to a hazardous materials incident, an immediate evacuation has been ordered for the area between Giant Road, Miner Ave, 11th Street, and Palmer Ave in San Pablo. This is an EVACUATION ORDER. LEAVE IMMEDIATELY and go to Contra Costa Community College Gym at 2600 Mission Bell Drive, parking lot 6 in San Pablo. Take only essential items you have ready and can carry with you. Pets must be in a carrier or on a leash. Stay off the phone unless you need to report a life-threatening emergency at your location. If you are physically unable to leave your home unassisted, call 9 1 1 for help.

Wednesday Timeline:

  • 6:13 pm:  Hazardous materials incident is still ongoing. Hundreds of boxes found with several hazardous materials. Residents of the immediate area have been evacuated to Contra Costa College Gym. Red Cross is on scene of Contra Costa College to receive residents. More details to come.
  • 4:33 pm: A CWS notifying a mandatory evacuation has been issued to surrounding residents of the scene. Residents can shelter at Contra Costa Community College gym. Those evacuating can expect to shelter in place at the evacuation center for up to 24 hours. Please avoid the area.
  • 2:10 pm: San Pablo PD has notified surrounding residents to shelter in place during the hazardous material incident. Hazmat is on scene investigating. More details to follow.
  • 1:44 pm: Con fire is on scene investigating a hazardous material leak in San Pablo. Please take caution. More details to follow.
