Contra Costa Fire Says 600 Chemicals Found San Pablo Shed

On Thursday, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District issued an update on the Hazmat incident in the City of San Pablo which prompted mandatory evacuations.

According to the District, materials have been identified to be over 600 different chemicals, some believed to be hazardous chemicals. They also said over 800 bottles of hazardous materials have been removed. They thanked the citizens of San Pablo for their patience along with the agencies involved in this ongoing operation. Chemicals ranged from explosives to flammable liquids.

Although the incident continues to be ongoing, some residents have been allowed to return home with the evacuation order lifted. CONFIRE will return Friday morning to remove the remaining chemicals after approximently 90% have already been moved.

As of 8:30 pm Thursday, San Pablo Police released the following statement:

Hazmat Technicians have removed a significant amount of dangerous materials from the location in the 900 block of Stanton Avenue. The Evacuation Order for most of the remaining residents on John Avenue and Stanton Avenue will be lifted around 9:00 pm. There remains five homes which must remain evacuated until crews can return in the morning to complete the removal of hazardous materials tomorrow. The San Pablo Police Department will remain on-scene for the duration of the evacuation order and hazmat removal operation. The San Pablo Police Department is coordinating resources for those five residences which will remain impacted through this evening. The incident began on Wednesday, The incident is occurring in the 900 block of Stanton Avenue which prompted multiple blocks to be evacuated displacing hundreds of residents. The evacuation order was anticipated to last 24-hours after first issuing a shelter-in-place order just before 1:00 pm.

Evacuation Order Continues in San Pablo After Hazmat Response

As of Thursday Morning, Contra Costa County Fire and County Hazmat are still working an incident that has prompted mandatory evacuations in the City of San Pablo.

Contra Costa County Fire said Wednesday it found hundreds of boxes found with several hazardous materials, a bomb squad was called in to investigate. CONFIRE has not yet stated publicly what were in the boxes.

At 6:20 am Thursday, San Pablo Police said they remained on scene along with CONFIRE and County Hazmat overnight and will remain present through the day. Contra Costa County Fire HAZMAT Teams, Contra Costa County Health Department, and San Pablo PD crews are still working this incident and the area remains closed to the Public.
