CONCORD, Calif. – Yellow Roof Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity founded by Dave and Lori Sanson, owners of Concord, Calif.-based DeNova Homes, announced that it has been awarded a $1 million grant from the State of California to support its mission of providing affordable rental homes for those at risk of homelessness.
The funds were presented to Yellow Roof officials by the members of Concord’s city council on January 9, 2024. California Assemblyman Tim S. Grayson, a strong advocate for Yellow Roof Foundation’s cause, played a crucial role in securing this grant, all of which will be used for new affordable rental housing in Concord.
The ongoing housing crisis in California, particularly in the affordable sector, has left a growing population at risk of homelessness. Yellow Roof Foundation, recognized as a 2022 California Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Grayson, is committed to addressing this pressing issue.
The Foundation is now working to identify sites in Concord for the development of affordable residences for local families and individuals in need of safe places to live within their budget.
Lori Sanson, co-founder of Yellow Roof Foundation, expressed her gratitude, stating, “When we founded Yellow Roof Foundation, we made it a priority to work with local jurisdictions to provide rental housing at below-market rates. This is what we aim to accomplish in Concord, and we are thankful that the city is joining us to address the housing crisis we have here.”
Current statistics in California reveal that most low-income households spend approximately 50 percent of their income on housing, placing immense burdens on their ability to afford other essential goods and services. Yellow Roof Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that no resident in their affordable communities pays more than 30 percent of their income towards housing costs. Furthermore, the foundation collaborates with partners to offer financial planning classes, job interview training, and other life skills courses to support residents on their journey towards stability.
“Assemblymember Grayson passionately supports Yellow Roof Foundation and views its efforts as a proof-of-concept model for building affordable housing,” said Michael Sponsler who serves as a District Director for Mr. Grayson and represented the Assemblymember at the recent Concord City Council meeting. “His goal is to find ways to support moving the Yellow Roof Foundation concept to scale across California and make headway in moving the needle on California’s drastic housing crisis. The Assemblymember is happy to support Yellow Roof Foundation and thanks the City of Concord for its efforts in this important endeavor.”
