The City of Lafayette is offering few details after a graffiti attack occurred on January 15 on the El Curtola Bridge after a peaceful demonstration.

According to preliminary information, demonstrators were protesting in support of the Israeli hostages, without incident, and left. Later, at some point overnight, pro-Palestine supporters showed up and vandalized the bridge with graffiti and hate speech. In response, it prompted a call to Lafayette Public Works to clean it up the next day as reported by News 24-680(Note – many images of the graffiti were not shared at the discretion of News 24-680)

In a statement, Mayor Gina Dawson provided little information on the incident, but did say they have a “zero tolerance” policy.

“At this time, there are no arrests, suspects, injuries, or camera footage that we are aware of. We have a long standing zero tolerance policy and our public works department cleaned the graffiti as soon as it was reported to them. We encourage our public to report complaints to the Lafayette Police Department if they do see any graffiti and the LPD will follow-up,” stated Dawson.

The Lafayette Police Department has not released any information or statement on the incident.

In the past year, the El Curtola Bridge has been the location for many protests, including one attacking Walnut Creek City Councilmember Kevin Wilk last June, political rallies, and other causes.  Meanwhile, back in March of 2021, Lafayette officials adopted a resolution asking the state to step in during Donald Trump Protests.
