On Saturday, the Crockett Carquinez Fire Department responded to a town-wide garage sale where it was discovered a resident had “live devices” prompting a bomb squad response.

According to Steve Trotter, Public Information Officer, the incident began around 5:30 pm after a resident brought the items to firefighters to take a look at.

“The items turned out to be a military grade grenade and some type of law enforcement grade ammunition used by swat teams,” said Trotter.

The incident prompt the fire department to issue a community alert for a hazardous condition emergency for Port Costa.  Crews were called to Canyon Lake Drive for reports of two pieces of military ordinance. CHP and Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office have evacuated the nearby area and have blocked traffic at the end of Reservoir Street and Carquinez Scenic Drive.

By 8:10 pm, the Travis Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal removed two live devices from the area. The situation was then under control and the area was safe to return to. All roads were then reopened in Port Costa.
