At 6:38 am Monday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a head-on traffic crash at Vasco and Walnut in the Town of Byron. Two people were later pronounced deceased.
It was reported that three vehicles were involved in a crash with airbags deployed and all lanes of traffic were blocked. A medical helicopter was dispatched. At least one vehicle was reportedly smoking from the impact.
About an hour earlier, crews were in the area after there was also a crash at 5:30 am Monday at Marsh Creek Road just west of Vasco involving three vehicles.
By 6:47 am, the Contra Costa County Sheriffs officer arrived on scene who reported one person was trapped and needed extrication. They were also not responsive. CONFIRE arrived shortly confirming the sheriffs assessment while also reporting two vehicles had major damages.
Additional AMR units were requested, however, they faced a 45-minute delay as they were both coming from West County.
By 6:53 am, one deceased victim, one major injuries and one with a minor injury. One person was transported to an area hospital. CHP issued a SIGALERT.

WOW. I fear commuting on this road every Friday. CoCo BOS needs to address safety on Vasco, I feel safer commuting Hwy 12. Additionally, 45 min for AMR to respond from West County?? What was the merger of the fire departments supposed to do other than address fires? Most fire departments include paramedics and doesn’t AMR have a headquarter in Antioch? They need to incorporate more strategies for how they can allocate resources in both East and West county? Were there other calls AMR was responding to at that time? Very concerning on both ends- transportation safety and ER responsiveness. I wonder if they will put this on their data measuring response times.
Just pay them all more money. I’m sure the service will improve /S
2 or 3 fatals in 3 weeks. This is absurd. BOS doesn’t care.
What is going on that there are so many crashes lately? People need to slow down, obey traffic laws, be respectful of other drivers on the road, drive defensively, leave early to avoid rushing and live.
There is only so much the county can realistically do to improve safety on Vasco Road. The fundamental problem is with the drivers.
There’s not even a K rail/ enter divide. That’s not a whole lot, and it’s definitely something that has been neglected for years. Sure we have a lot of really bad drivers, but at the same time these fatalities are unacceptable; and something currently CAN be done to help with all these head-ons.
Distracted driving is the issue, more then the road itself. Put the F-ing phones down while driving!
There is only one solution: 4 lanes all the way through with concrete divider in the center.
Unfortunately, east side Contra Costa County is the busiest of the 3 sections of the county and if it were busy at the time it would still be a prolonged eta if there were an available ambulance. County Fire doesn’t transport, AMR does and with a significant trauma patient the priority is to get the patient to a trauma hospital which Contra Costa only has 1. The county is rural and the only option is Medical Helicopter which there are only about 3 available at the time, if they are in service..
The issue on East County roads is NOT poor design. The issue is idiots and knuckleheads. People act like they are the only ones who should be on the road and they just HAVE to get around everyone else because THEY;RE time is sooooo much more valuable. I hate East County with a passion. I hate the cities, I hate everything about this part of the world. Best I can say is this seems like our version of population control
Yes, but it is getting worse and worse with bad people. Parents don’t teach their kids values anymore, because they weren’t taught values themselves by their parents. In the olden times at least the schools did teach some values, filling the gap from the parents. Now the schools aren’t allowed to teach values anymore.
