The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito between January 14-February 3 according to the El Cerrito Police Department.

The following is a summary of criminal activity in El Cerrito. It does not include all crimes. It also does not include non-criminal events such as missing persons, traffic collisions, non-criminal deaths, non-criminal disputes, nor many other police activities that do not result in arrest.

January 14th

Vehicle Theft – 3200 block of Santa Clara Ave:
A vehicle was stolen sometime between 12/28/2023 and 7:00 AM on 1/14/2024.

Vehicle Theft – 1700 block of Liberty St:
A vehicle was stolen between 9:00 PM on 1/13/2024 and 11:00 AM on 1/14/2024.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – 10175 San Pablo Ave:
At 1:02 PM, an officer recovered a vehicle reported stolen to Oakland PD on 1/12/2024. It was discovered abandoned on the lawn of the business.

Warrant Arrest – San Pablo Ave at Blake St:
At 9:51 PM, an officer conducted a pedestrian stop. The officer conducted a records check on the subject and discovered he had a non-citable warrant. The subject was booked at the ECPD and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

January 15TH

Shoplifting – 11450 San Pablo Avenue (Safeway):
At 6:12 AM, a suspect stole miscellaneous items from the store and fled the scene.

Auto Burglary – 6100 block of Potrero Ave.
At 11:24 PM, the victim reports that the suspects shattered a window to the victim’s vehicle and stole property from within.

Auto Burglary – 1400 block of Kearney St.
At 12:47 PM, the victim reported that the suspect shattered a window to the victim’s vehicle and stole property from within.

Commercial Burglary – 11430 San Pablo Ave (Subway):
At 5:19 AM, an unknown suspect shattered the front window of the business and stole items.

January 16th

Vandalism and Assault – 1000 El Cerrito Plaza (Lucky):
At 7:36 AM, the suspect attempted to steal items but was confronted by store employees.  The suspect shattered two bottles of wine on the ground and knocked over a store display.  The suspect attempted to hit a store employee but missed.  The suspect fled westbound through the parking lot prior to police arrival.

Commercial Burglary – 11775 San Pablo Avenue (Frannie Express):
At 2:25 AM, the first suspect shattered the front glass door and stole items from the counter.  At 9:16 AM, a second suspect entered the business through the shattered door and stole additional items from the counter.

Commercial Burglary – 11785 San Pablo Avenue (Launder Land):
At 11:11 AM, a suspect pushed open the front doors to the business and attempted to pry open a back-room door.

Organized Retail Theft – 11565 San Pablo Avenue (Walgreen’s):
At 11:48 AM, two suspects entered the store, filled garbage bags with store merchandise and fled on foot prior to police arrival.

Battery – 670 El Cerrito Plaza (CVS):
At 8:23 PM, two suspects assaulted an employee after a verbal argument.  The suspects fled the scene prior to police arrival.

January 17th

Stolen Vehicle / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – San Pablo Ave at Madison Ave:
At 8:07 PM, officers received a stolen vehicle on the city’s Flock system.  Officers located the vehicle and arrested the driver. During a search of the vehicle, drug paraphernalia was found inside. The driver was later transported to Martinez Detention Facility.

January 18th

Robbery – 6050 El Cerrito Plaza (Barnes & Noble):
At 6:48 PM, officers responded to the report of a robbery.  The suspect attempted to steal merchandise from the store and was stopped by employees.  The suspect then brandished a knife at an employee.  The suspect fled the area on foot prior to police arrival.

January 19TH

Battery – 400 Block of Kearney St.
At 8:43 PM, an officer reports two neighbors got into a verbal altercation that turned physical. Both parties accused each other of assault. This case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Residential Burglary – 900 Block of Pomona Ave.
At 8:37 PM, an officer reports the suspect shattered out a window to gain entry and stole property.

January 20th

Shoplifting – 11565 San Pablo Ave (Walgreens):
At 9:41 PM, an officer reports the suspect filled up a garbage bag with merchandise and ran out of the store without paying.

Arson – 11700 Block of San Pablo Ave.
At 5:04 AM, an officer reports a suspect started a fire in the electrical room of the building.

Warrant Arrest – 11700 Block of San Pablo Ave.
While investigating the above incident, officers contacted a person nearby. During a record’s check, officers discovered they had an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The person was taken into custody and transported to the El Cerrito PD for booking. After booking the male was released on a citation.

January 21st

Shoplifting – 11454 San Pablo Avenue (Ross):
At 6:19 PM, an officer reports the suspect grabbed merchandise and fled the store without paying.

January 22nd

Nothing to report.

January 23rd

Shoplifting – 670 El Cerrito Plaza (CVS):
At 8:26 AM, officers report a suspect stole miscellaneous items from the store and fled.

Shoplifting – 11450 San Pablo Avenue (Safeway):
At 9:27 AM, officers report a suspect stole miscellaneous items and fled.

Shoplifting – 10794 San Pablo Avenue (Marshalls):
At 6:51 PM, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a suspect for shoplifting. The subject was cited and released.

Robbery – 7022 Stockton Avenue (7-Eleven):
At 8:19 PM, an officer reports two masked subjects entered the business and told the employee to get back and the employee feared for their safety. The subjects stole merchandise and fled in a vehicle.

January 24th

Attempted Stolen Vehicle – 500 block of Albemarle St.
At 1:13 PM, officers report the victim noticed her vehicle had a broken window.  Upon further investigation, the victim noticed the ignition had been damaged.  The crime occurred between 01/20/2024 – 01/24/2024.

Petty Theft – 7500 block of Curry Ave.
At 1:36 PM, officers reported the victim parked a vehicle in front of their house.  The victim later discovered miscellaneous items were taken from inside the vehicle.

Shoplift – 11565 San Pablo Avenue (Walgreens):
At 6:39 PM, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a suspect for shoplifting. The subject was cited and released.

Brandishing – 11700 block of San Pablo Ave.
At 10:37 PM, an officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of a suspect who brandished a weapon. The subject was later transported to Martinez Detention Facility.

Driving Under the Influence – San Pablo Ave. at Waldo Ave.
At 11:38 PM, an officer responded to a vehicle accident. The officer conducted a DUI investigation and determined the driver was intoxicated. The driver of the vehicle was placed under arrest for DUI and booked at the El Cerrito PD. After booking, the driver was released to a sober friend.

Vandalism – 2300 block of Mono Ave.
At 3:45 AM, an unknown suspect shattered a window on the victim’s vehicle.

January 25th

Shoplift – 2000 El Cerrito Plaza (Ross):
At 9:53 AM, an officer responded to the report of a suspect who entered the store, selected merchandise, and fled without paying.

Brandishing / Criminal Threats – 300 El Cerrito Plaza (Joann Fabrics):
At 9:28 AM, an officer responded to a report of a subject that was told to leave the plaza. The subject pulled out a weapon and threatened the victim with it. Subject then fled the plaza before police arrival.

Assault with a deadly weapon – 2000 block of Tapscott Ave.
At 3:26 PM, officers responded to a report of roommates in a physical fight. When officers arrived, they found one person with multiple injuries. The victim was transported to the hospital. The subject was booked to the El Cerrito PD and later transported to Martinez Detention Facility.

January 26th

Identity Theft – 1300 block of Noble Ct.
At 8:55 AM, an officer reports the victim was scammed out of money by telephone.

Residential Burglary – 6800 block of Blake St.
At 3:13 PM, an officer reports two suspects forced entry into a home around 8:26 PM on 1/24/2024 and stole property.

January 27th

Commercial Burglary – 10057 San Pablo Ave (Pastime Ace Hardware):
At 5:56 AM, three suspects shattered the front door glass and entered the store and stole items.  Suspects fled prior to police arrival.

January 28th

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – 200 block of Behrens St.
At 6:37 AM, an officer recovered a vehicle that was reported stolen to San Leandro PD on 1/21/2024.

Shoplift – 5805 Cutting Blvd (Sketchers Outlet):
At 3:49 PM, a suspect stole entered the store, selected merchandise, and fled without paying.

Robbery – 11565 San Pablo Ave (Walgreens):
At 8:36 PM, an officer reports an employee witnessed the suspect conceal merchandise inside his jacket and attempted to leave the store. The employe attempted to stop the suspect from leaving and the suspect pushed the employee and made threats to the employee.

Robbery/ Warrant Arrest/ Possession of a Controlled Substance – 11450 San Pablo Ave (Safeway):
At 9:44 PM, an officer reports the security guards recognized the suspect from prior thefts. The suspect attempted to leave the store with merchandise he had concealed inside his clothing. When the security guards attempted to detain the suspect, he elbowed one of the guards. The other guard sprayed the suspect with pepper spray. Officers located the suspect in the parking lot in distress from the pepper spray. ECFD and AMR were summoned to provide medical treatment to the suspect. AMR transported the suspect to a local hospital for further treatment. While at the hospital, the suspect was found to be in possession of unpaid merchandise and suspected heroin. During a records check, officers discovered the suspect had an active warrant. After being medically cleared, the suspect was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Drunk in Public – San Pablo Ave. at Fresno Ave.
At 11:43 PM, an officer noticed a subject that appeared intoxicated with several empty beer bottles around him. After further investigation, the officer determined the subject was unable to care for himself and placed him under arrest. The subject was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility after booking.

January 29th

Grand Theft – S.56th at Cypress Ave.
At 2:30 PM, a AT&T worker reports that a suspect cut copper wire from the poles located adjacent to the freeway.

Armed Robbery – 11450 San Pablo Ave (Safeway):
At 10:04 PM, officers responded to an armed robbery in the parking lot.  The victims were loading their groceries when the suspect approached them and demanded their belongings.  The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival.

January 30th

Attempted Commercial Burglary, False Identification, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and a Warrant Arrest – 11700 block of San Pablo Ave. 

At 2:27 PM, a suspect attempted to rip open the doors to a closed business.  The suspect went to an adjacent business and attempted to pry open an office door.  The suspect was detained and positively identified by witnesses. The suspect was in possession of a meth pipe, lied about his name and was in violation with the terms of his probation.  The suspect was booked at the El Cerrito PD and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Forgery, False Identification, False Personation, Possession of a Controlled Substance – 11100 San Pablo Ave (Bank of Montreal (BMO)):
At 4:50 PM, a suspect used a fake driver license and attempted to cash a fraudulent check.  The suspect was in possession of other fraudulent items, altered identifications, and methamphetamine.  The suspect was arrested, booked at the El Cerrito PD and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Stolen Vehicle – 1000 El Cerrito Plaza (Lucky):
At 7:00 PM, the victim reported their vehicle stolen from the parking lot.

Burglary / Identity Theft – 10636 San Pablo Ave (24hr Fitness):
At 8:01 PM, the victim reported their locker was broken into on 1/29/2024. The victim’s belongings were stolen, and credit cards were used in Richmond.

Burglary / Stolen Vehicle – 10636 San Pablo Ave (24hr Fitness):
At 11:59 PM, the victim reported their locker broken into and car keys were stolen.  When the victim walked out, they noticed their vehicle had been stolen.

Vandalism – 6400 Block of Fairmount Ave.
At 1:31 AM, officers responded to the report of a vandalism.  The suspect shattered a window to the business and was located nearby by officers. The suspect was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained during the broken window.  The case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office for prosecution.

Grand Theft – Blake St. at Lexington Ave.
At 2:46 AM, while on routine patrol, an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle. The officers investigated the vehicle and found out it was parked in front of the owner’s house. The officer contacted the owner, when the owner examined their vehicle, they realized that someone had stolen property from the vehicle.

January 31st

Stolen Vehicle – 1300 block of Norvell St.
At 10:03 AM, the victim reported their vehicle stolen last night after 5 PM.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – Kearney St. at Fairmount Ave.
At 10:58 AM, an officer located a stolen vehicle that was parked along the roadway unoccupied.  The vehicle was recovered and later released to the registered owner.

Stolen Vehicle – 3200 block of Belmont Ave.
At 11:53 AM, the victim reported that their vehicle was stolen last night.

Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – 2000 El Cerrito Plaza (Ross):
At 2:12 PM, an officer was called to the store to assist the fire department with an unresponsive person in the dressing room. When the officer arrived, they noticed drug paraphernalia around the subject. The subject woke up and was in no need of medical attention. The subject was placed under arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia, issued a citation, and released.

Stolen Vehicle – 600 block of Liberty St.
At 4:43 PM, the victim reports that their vehicle was stolen last night.

Failure to Comply with a Lawful Order/ Stolen Vehicle – San Pablo Ave. at Madison Ave.
At 4:43 PM, officers attempted to stop a reported stolen vehicle, however the vehicle fled northbound on San Pablo Ave. A pursuit was not initiated due to concerns for public safety.

Grand Theft / Theft of Access Card – 540 Ashbury Ave (El Cerrito High School):
At 6:15 PM, the victim reported their jacket and wallet was stolen from school today.

Stolen Vehicle – 500 block of Oak St.
At 7:19 PM, the victim returned from work to find his car stolen.

February 1st

Shoplifting – 11545 San Pablo Ave (Ross):
At 12:43 PM, the suspect entered the business, grabbed a handful of merchandise, and fled.

Organized Retail Theft – 11565 San Pablo Ave (Walgreen’s):
At 2:16 PM, six suspects loaded bags of merchandise and fled without paying.

February 2nd

Recovered Stolen Vehicle – 5700 block of El Dorado Ave.
At 10:31 AM, a community service officer impounded an abandoned vehicle that they later learned was stolen out of San Francisco.

Vehicle Theft – 1400 block of Liberty St.
At 12:04 PM, an officer reports a vehicle was stolen between 4:00 PM on 1/25/2024 and noon on 2/2/2024.

Shoplift – 5805 Cutting Blvd (Sketchers Outlet):
At 3:09 PM, a suspect stole merchandise and fled without paying.

Shoplift / Warrant Arrest – 10794 San Pablo Ave (Marshall’s):
At 3:40 PM, a Sergeant was flagged down regarding a shoplift from Marshall’s and detained the suspect.  An officer accepted the citizen’s arrest of the suspect for shoplifting.  The suspect had a no bail warrant for his arrest and was later booked at the Martinez Detention Facility.

Robbery – 10794 San Pablo Ave (Marshall’s):
At 3:46 PM, while speaking with the witness for the above case, an officer was flagged down for another shoplift / robbery.  The officer stopped the suspect and placed them under arrest. The suspect was later booked at the Martinez Detention Facility.

Shoplifting – 10794 San Pablo Ave (Marshall’s):
At 8:30 PM, an officer was patrolling in the area when he was flagged down by employee for a report of a theft in progress. The employees pointed out the suspect and the officer detained them. The suspect was placed under Citizen’s Arrest and transported to the El Cerrito PD for booking. After booking, the suspect was issued a citation.

Driving Under the Influence – San Pablo Ave. at Manila Ave.
At 3:30 AM, an officer conducted a traffic enforcement stop and arrested the driver for Driving Under the Influence. The driver was transported to the El Cerrito PD for booking. After booking, the driver was issued a citation and released to a sober friend.
