Solar Panel Fire at Office Depot Prompts Evacuations in Antioch

At 11:48 am Sunday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a fire on the roof of PetSmart in the City of Antioch.

Crews responded to the 5800 block of Lone Tree Way to PetSmart where it was discovered solar panels on top of Office Depot were on fire.

According to Battalion Chief Jeff Burris, Engine 88 was on Highway 4 when it reported the smoke and  began to respond to the area nearby. Upon arrival, the crews mobilized and began to call for evacuations of both PetSmart and Office Depot–no animals were injured.

A short-time later, crews made their way to the roof where they located solar panels on fire a small portion of the roof. The fire was then knocked down. PG&E was requested to the scene.

The Antioch Police Department also responded to block of a portion of the parking lot and provide crowd control. AMR was also on scene as a precaution.

Both PetSmart and Office Depot have damage from the fire which includes water damages. It is unclear if either store will re-open Sunday or if either store will need to be closed until repairs are completed.

1:40 pm UPDATE

ConFire responded to a rooftop fire at Office Depot in Antioch this afternoon involving multiple solar panels. Office Depot sustained significant damage during the fire and will be closed until repairs are made.  Petsmart was temporarily evacuated  during the incident.

Fortunate Engine 88 saw the problem and was on scene so quickly.
Would be very interested in fire investigation report as to cause and reason for amount of fire spread.
From picture it appears there are foam panels as part of roofing system.
